The project "patential.io" is situated in the context of business and innovation in German medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). In light of the pressure German SMEs face due to declining innovative capacity, there has been a recognized need to find new ways to foster innovation. In today's digital era and an ever-changing economic landscape, it is crucial for companies to improve their innovation processes and remain competitive.
Patential emerged from the necessity to assist medium-sized companies in strengthening their innovative capacity. The current situation reveals that innovation processes are often time-consuming, costly, and inadequately documented. There is a need for a solution that supports companies in generating new inventions more quickly and targetedly, to reinforce their competitive position.
"Patential" was initiated with the conviction that a strong culture of innovation is vital in the German economy. It aims to assist medium-sized companies in enhancing their innovative capacity, staying competitive, and unlocking new business opportunities. Through better access to patents and targeted combination of ideas, companies can accelerate their innovation processes and develop solutions that meet current market demands. The project aims to contribute to strengthening the German SME sector and promoting economic innovation.
The actual project "Patential" involves developing a web application that aids medium-sized companies in discovering and combining innovative ideas. Instead of just evaluating existing ideas, it's about generating new ones by leveraging publicly available patents. Patential enables companies to combine these patents, add their own ideas, and export the results for further steps, such as review by a patent attorney or for internal development.
Patential's approach is based on a methodical iterative process. By discovering, combining, and augmenting patents and their own ideas, an innovative solution space is created. The project team worked closely with medium-sized companies to understand their specific requirements and accordingly tailor the web application. The development of Patential was carried out in close cooperation with experts from various fields to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the innovation process in SMEs.
The connection with design lies in enhancing the innovation process in medium-sized companies. By integrating patent database research into the process, companies gain access to a wide range of expertise and technologies. The design of Patential ensures a user-friendly and intuitive platform, enabling companies to effectively implement their creative ideas and develop innovative solutions.
As part of the "Patential" project, an innovative web application was developed to help medium-sized companies enhance their innovative capacity and unlock new business opportunities. Patential enables companies to generate new inventions by combining publicly available patents with their own ideas. The platform offers a user-friendly interface that allows companies to effectively implement their creative ideas and develop innovative solutions. The project demonstrated that the targeted use of patents and the integration of design into the innovation process can significantly contribute to increasing the competitiveness and innovative capacity of medium-sized companies. Thus, Patential represents an important tool for promoting innovation capacity in the German SME sector.
To more effectively communicate with stakeholders and simultaneously refine the strategy and concept, complete screen views (screens) were created. With these, we can concretely demonstrate to medium-sized businesses and patent attorneys how the tool can practically support them. This type of visualization helps them imagine how they could use the application themselves. In later sales conversations, the thoughtful design of the application promotes confidence in the functionality of the tool, not only in theory but also in practice.
Our decision to offer the newly developed software as a SaaS application is based on the increasing acceptance and benefits of cloud services in medium-sized companies, offering numerous advantages such as cost savings, scalability, security, and flexibility.
